Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 4 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 2 tbsp lemon zest (about 2 lemons)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened, divided)
  • For the frosting: 4 oz cream cheese, powdered sugar, lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Bloom the yeast by combining warm milk, yeast, and sugar; let sit until frothy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add eggs, softened butter, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and bloomed yeast mixture. Mix until combined.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Let rise in a greased bowl covered until doubled (about 1 hour).
  4. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle and spread filling evenly. Roll tightly and cut into slices.
  6. Place in a greased baking dish; cover and let rise again until puffy (about 1 hour).
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For frosting: Beat softened butter and cream cheese; gradually add powdered sugar along with lemon juice.
  9. Spread frosting over warm rolls before serving.
