Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp gel-based red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Candy fangs for decoration
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 tbsp gel-based red food coloring
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or plant-based milk
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Cream together softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  4. Mix baking soda with vinegar and fold into the batter gently.
  5. Fill muffin cups two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling completely.
  6. Hollow out the center of each cupcake and fill with a mixture of red velvet cake crumbs, sweetened condensed milk, melted butter, and additional red food coloring.
  7. Frost with skin-tone buttercream frosting made from softened butter, powdered sugar, milk or cream, and food coloring as desired.
  8. Decorate with candy fangs and drizzle with red syrup for a 'blood' effect.
